Shopify to WhatsApp: Order Updates, Sent Automatically

When an order ships, your customer gets a WhatsApp message from your business number with their name, order number and a tracking link, without anyone on your team typing it.

The connection runs through Shopify Flow, Shopify’s own free automation app, which calls MsgOrb whenever an order is fulfilled, paid or cancelled.

What it sends

MessageWhen
Delivery updateWhen an order is fulfilled, with the tracking link
Order confirmationWhen an order is paid (your own template)
Cancellation noticeWhen an order is cancelled (your own template)

What you need

  • A MsgOrb account with WhatsApp connected
  • Shopify Flow, on a Shopify plan that includes its Send HTTP request action (Grow, Advanced or Plus); on Basic or Starter, use Zapier or Make instead
  • An approved utility template, such as MsgOrb’s starter Delivery Notification

Set it up

  1. 1In MsgOrb, open Notification → Delivery, create the starter Delivery Notification template and wait for Meta to approve it.
  2. 2Select it as the template to send, map its blanks to the fields Shopify will send, and copy your endpoint URL and API key.
  3. 3In Shopify Flow, create a workflow with the Order fulfilled trigger and a Send HTTP request action that posts to your MsgOrb endpoint with your API key.
  4. 4Turn the workflow on and fulfil a test order. The call shows in MsgOrb’s connection logs.

Questions

Why does it use Shopify Flow?

MsgOrb identifies your workspace with an x-api-key header, and Shopify’s built-in webhooks can’t send custom headers. Shopify Flow’s Send HTTP request action can.

What phone number does it use?

Whichever your checkout collects: the shipping address phone, the order phone or the customer’s phone. It must include the country code.

What does each message cost?

Order updates are utility messages, which Meta charges per message by country ($0.0034 in the US and Canada). MsgOrb adds nothing.
